A Journey to Ethiopia with Our First Participant Nadia
It all started with a chance meeting at a volunteer dinner. In the winter of 2024, we met Nadia, a passionate and experienced nurse. As we shared stories about our projects in Ethiopia, her enthusiasm was immediate—she wanted to be part of it. Inspired by the impact of our work, she decided to contribute her medical expertise to the Ilanga project. One year later, we found ourselves on a plane to Addis Ababa, ready for an adventure.
Arrival in Addis Ababa - November 2024
Addis Ababa, the "New Flower," welcomed us with its vibrant energy. After a short rest at the hotel, we visited the Ilanga project in the Gofa Gabriel district. The warm welcome from the staff and the curious gazes of the children touched us deeply. Together with Ilanga's president and the Ethiopian leadership team, we planned the upcoming days to best prepare for Nadia's courses. A weekend filled with impressions—from the bustling Mercato market to traditional music and delicious Injera—rounded off our arrival.
Nadia's Courses at Ilanga
On Monday, Nadia began her work with two BLS (Basic Life Support) courses. Despite initial nervousness, she quickly found her rhythm and captivated participants with her hands-on teaching approach.
After the first 20 minutes of teaching, I forgot my fear and was completely in my element. The openness and immense interest of the participants made the courses an exciting and interactive experience.

Her dedication and the warm reception from the Ilanga team left a lasting impact.
Expanding the Training Sessions
Nadia's courses were also well received in the school project. She trained staff and the school nurse, which proved to be another great success. After a short break, she led information sessions for single mothers, providing valuable emergency care tips. The lively discussions and exchanges with the mothers were enriching for everyone involved.
Conclusion and Looking Ahead
After several intense weeks, we took the opportunity to travel through southern Ethiopia, including a visit to the Berhan Learning Center school project in Gidole. The joy of reunion and the positive developments on-site were overwhelming. We returned to Switzerland with countless memories and new impressions, inspired to continue our work.
